JustinBrennan - Turbulence
July 1 - July 31, 2016
Native Cleveland Annex
Justin Brennan's contemporary paintings are tumultuous and engaging. He utilizes abstraction, bypassing any self-censoring thought, and creates art that is raw and emotional. In allowing himself to be influenced by what surrounds him and by focusing on day-to-day interactions and relationships he is able to express raw emotion via spontaneous creativity without analytical prodding.
Justin speaks about this new body of work:
"This series has been created through emotional lows, highs, anger, fear, violence while eventually leading to steadiness and contentment. The term "turbulence" refers to my psychological state, thoughts, emotions and the interactions throughout the past eight months of creating this work. My brushstrokes, application of paint, palette and composition have all been directly affected as a result of this turbulence.
In contrast of my previous works, these paintings protrude through the restrictions of the edges of the canvases and panels - continuously rotating the support while working, making sure the composition is fluent in all directions.
Though we are living in turbulent times that affect everyone on a greater scale, I still remain interested in the personal experience. I paint about what directly affects me and what I continue to question and reach for understanding in, namely myself."
