"Tragedies in vibrant pop tones deteriorating over time.
Things that should be familiar, normal, and expected but are ‘off’ enough to feel wrong.
Structured repetitive aesthetic discomfort."
- Dan Miller, Artist
Dan Miller returns to Maria Neil with an artistic odyssey that was years in the making. Melancholy & Malignancy is a colorful journey through the mind, heart, and body of not just Miller but his mother, Libby. Initially a thought experiment about what depression would look like if it were a pathogen, bacteria, or parasite, the idea became something larger when his mother was diagnosed with a terminal cancer.
Although the original message Dan wanted to explore and convey changed, his method/presentation did not. Miller adds, "No longer was this just a self-indulgent exploration strictly about depression and mental health, it became about the confluence of crushing grief, the arduous journey, and our struggles as a family over the last year."

Dan Miller : Some Disassembly Required
August 2, 2019 - September 27, 2019
(at Waterloo Arts)
Waterloo Arts is at 15605 Waterloo Road, Cleveland, Ohio 44110
In 2017, artist and gallery owner Dan Miller survived what should have been a fatal motorcycle wreck. He was the victim of a hit and run. The trauma and subsequent depression was a tough time for Dan, but it also caused a creative spark in him.
Dan conceptualized an exhibition creating pieces dealing with that trauma and severe depression. His experience will be interpreted through robot surrogates. “Some Disassembly Required” tells those stories through derelict suicidal robots and dystopian themes. It seems like a dark concept, and it is, but Dan presents it in a way that is both accessible and reflective.
